Someone’s pretending to be Christina Miller online. They’ve convinced a viral YouTuber to investigate Bedrock, the congregation who publicly burned a popular teen novel in 1999. Officially, the confrontation led to a local librarian’s death by suicide, but that’s not the whole story. If the YouTuber uncovers what Christina did, her reputation and career as a literacy advocate could be ruined.
The only other person who knows the truth is Stass, the best friend who would never betray her. However, Christina’s old flame Van suddenly reappears and knows more than he should. As the YouTuber starts digging up evidence implicating Christina, she and her sisters chase the catfisher. Along the way, Christina uncovers disturbing details about her parents’ connection to Bedrock’s charismatic leader, and learns that nothing she was told about the librarian’s death is true.
The story moves between Christina’s present-day pursuit of the identity thief, and what really happened at Bedrock as the congregation prepares for Y2K doomsday. When reality is revealed, Christina must finally confront what she believes about her family and herself, and decide what can be salvaged from both.
